Sin Limites – A Spanish SCI Support Group
In the US, Spanish-speaking support groups for people with spinal cord injuries are hard to come by, which is why we’re excited to profile the Spanish SCI Support Group also known as Sin Limites (Without Limits), created by Disability Partnerships. Disability Partnerships is a community-based nonprofit from Maryland that partners with multiple sectors to provide programs and activities for people with spinal cord injuries.
They offer programs such as online adaptive wellness, self-defense, and grants for affordable and accessible housing. Their Spanish SCI Support Group is rare and is serving a great need. Since it’s online, it’s possible for anyone, anywhere to join. People with spinal cord injuries time and time again report that they feel better mentally when they talk to other people with spinal cord injuries. Online SCI support groups are a great advancement provided by technology.
The Spanish SCI Support Group from Disability Partnerships is a support group to check out for anyone with a spinal cord injury who’s also a Spanish speaker. Not only is it online, making it possible for anyone to join, but it’s also free. All you need is a computer or smartphone and a Wifi connection and before you know it, your entire world can be richer. Read on to learn more about the Spanish SCI Support Group.
Why Join?
Support groups for people with spinal cord injuries are one of the best ways to learn about life with paralysis. For many people initially after their injury, it can be difficult socializing with others who are also paralyzed. This is in part due to their own difficulties accepting their disability. But for most, once they join a support group and are around others who truly understand them (and not pity them or pretend they understand), the changes they experience in healing are monumental.
Before the pandemic, most support groups were in-person and at rehabilitation centers. What is unique about Sin Limites, is that it is a strictly online-based spinal cord injury support group. As long as you have an Internet connection and a Zoom account, you can take part in this group.
You also do not need to be a citizen of the US. No matter where you live in the world, if you can speak Spanish and are affected by a spinal cord injury, this group will welcome you.
How to Join
If you would like to check out the Spanish SCI support group, they meet online-only, and they meet twice a month — the first Thursday and the third Thursday of every month at 4:00 pm EST. For most, in order to receive the Zoom link, you will need to register for an event with Disability Partnerships. The group is open to anyone with a spinal cord injury, as well as anyone supporting them (or medical personnel).
To register, simply go to their Register for an Event Page here (https://www.disabilitypartnerships.org/events) and to fill out their online form. After giving them your name and an email address, select "Spanish SCI Support Group" under the "Event Type" option, and let them know how you heard about them and any special accommodations you may need. After submitting your form, Jessica, the person who runs the support group, sends the Zoom link.
They also have a Facebook group that continues the discussion after the online meeting is over. The group is private, but you can request access to the group here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/sinlimitessci
Not interested in registering? Jessica was kind enough to share the Zoom link to the Spanish SCI Support Group with SpinalCord.com readers. You can find the information below.
